September 11th
Today looked like another good day. The view of the sun rise from our balcony was pretty special.
Qaqortog means “White Palace” in Greenlandic and this small town of about 3400 is the cultural and commercial center of Southern Greenland. We gathered at Vines on the 5th deck at 7:15AM to catch the tender for a short tour of the Great Greenland Tannery.
This is the only tannery for all of Greenland. Our guide explained the process of preparing the seal skins for sale and export. He told us that the seal skin industry is shrinking…the future is unclear. This will have a major impact on life in Greenland. No pictures were allowed in the tannery and we could not purchase anything in the shop as anything containing seal skin can not be taken back in to the US.
After our short tour, we wandered around the town but everything was very crowded. In all reality, our ship, with 2600 passengers, effectively doubled the population of this small town…this really isn’t a tourist stop. Pretty little town but couldn’t even find a beer!!!!
We were back on the ship before noon…Up to the top to get a beer and a piece of pizza. Tonight, our Chef’s Table has been rescheduled. Really looking forward to that……..
